Brief Biography of John S. C. Abbott:
John Stevens Cabot Abbott (September 18, 1805 - June 17, 1877) was an American writer. His birthplace was Brunswick, Maine.
His brother was Jacob Abbott and the two collaborated in the preparation of his series of brief historical biographies.
Abbott trained for the ministry at Andover Theological Seminary, and was a parish pastor from 1830 to 1844 in several towns in Massachussetts. After retiring from the ministry in 1844, John S.C Abbott devoted his life to literature.
He wrote many works on Christian ethics and renewed an interest in history with his popular historical works. He is perhaps best known as the author of the History of Napoleon Bonaparte (1855). Also among his famous writings are: History of the Civil War in America (1863-66), and History of Frederick the Great (1871).
Abbott died in 1877at Fair Haven, Connecticut.
